LATEST NEWS - Under 10 Footballers did very well at the Tir na nOg tournament on September 23rd in Randalstown - details below

U10 Tir na nÓg Football Tournament - Saturday 23rd Sept 2006

Éire Óg’s first encounter was against the hosts Randalstown. Some disciplined play in the 1st half of the game saw the Ógs come in a point ahead at the break. A fine 2nd half display centred around a very strong backline of Jack Bohill, Conal O’Neill, Conor Smyth and keeper Kevin Connolly. A commanding performance in midfield by Adam, Ruairi and Fionn Mulvenna enabled the forward line of David McEvoy, Conor McGeough and Seán Hayes to take advantage of time and space to take some fine scores and come out comfortable winners.

Our next game was against Erin’s Own, Cargin. The Ógs showed a real determination to build on their earlier win and pretty much pinned Cargin in their own half, scoring freely with little reply.

The third game of the day against Roger Casement’s who’d travelled down from Portglenone was a different story. A hard fought game from the outset, Casement’s took advantage of the wind in the first half and came in at half time 4 points up. The turnaround was a different story with the Ógs dominating possession against a physically more mature team for the whole of the 2nd period. Some fine interplay between the midfield and forward line allowed Éire Óg to pull level and should have come out easy winners but for a combination of a turn of wind and the woodwork. A disputed point left Portglenone winners- but they knew they had been in a game.

The next scheduled game was against All Saints Ballymena, who unfortunately had to forfeit due to pre-arranged travel commitments. Randalstown kindly agreed another game that the Ógs, again, went on to win comfortably.

A tremendous effort by all the players on the day made this a very enjoyable day out, with hopefully encouraging future prospects for our young players.

Our thanks must also go to Tir na nÓg for the invitation to a very well run tournament and for their hospitality to players and mentors in the clubhouse afterwards.

All in all, the standard of football was superb and credit must go to the hard working mentors from all the clubs involved.
